Ray Ellis (1921 - 2013), one of the Island's best known and beloved artists, chronicled quintessential Vineyard moments, including those inspired by the annual Martha's Vineyard Bluefish Derby. He was a colleague and collaborator of the infamous news anchor and author, Walker Cronkite (1916-2009). Together they created two volumes — South by Southwest (1983) and North by Northwest (1986) — written by Cronkite and illustrated by Ellis, that depict saililng journeys to points north and south of the Vineyard on the Eastern seaboard.
A collection of our hometown hero's work is on perpetual display at our North Water Gallery in historic downtown Edgartown.
This spring Jim Flannery of Anglers Journal wrote a beautiful homage to Ray and his work in an article aptly titled, Inspired by an Island.
